BLURB from Goodreads
Ever since she escaped the city within the Wall, Lark Ainsley's wanted one thing: to find her brother Basil. She's always believed he would be the one to put an end to the constant fear and flight. And now, hidden underground in the chaotically magical city of Lethe, Lark feels closer to him than ever.

But Lethe is a city cowering in fear of its founder, the mysterious Prometheus, and of his private police force. To get the truth about what happened to Basil, Lark has no choice but to face Prometheus.

Facing her fears has become second nature to Lark. Facing the truth is another matter.

Lark never asked to be anyone's savior. She certainly never wanted to be anyone's weapon. She might not have a choice.

MY REVIEW
I downloaded this book from Netgalley to read in my kindle free of charge in exchange for my honest review of it. The cover represents the book brilliantly well, as it features the underground tunnels mentioned in the book. I also like the placement and style of the book title and Authors name too. There's also the addition on the Trilogy name too. The cover gives a very metallic feel which fits with the iron featured in this book really well.
The blurb then tells us enough about the book without giving away any major spoilers.
So once again Lark sets out alone in search of her brother Basil. Then she realises she is being followed and finds that Tansy from the Ironwood has been behind her since leaving Dorian and the other renewables. So Tansy and Lark continue into the wilderness, heading towards the unknown next settlement.
It's difficult to say without giving away spoilers and still make sense but I will try my best.
So the girls "escape" one danger, meet up with Oren, then end up in the settlement called Lethe. Tansy is separated from Oren and Lark. Eventually Oren and Lark end up with the "underground rebels" of the settlement. Apparently the man in charge of the whole settlement is called Prometheus and whilst people eagerly supported him to begin with, times have changed and it seems that Prometheus is creating a similar dynamic to what existed behind the wall where Lark originally escaped from. There is an underground movement that is using a book they found to guide them. In the book, there are pencil drawings of a girl . . a girl that looks remarkably like Lark! Could the book have at sometime belonged to Basil? Is Basil alive? Is Basil captured by Prometheus and being tortured for his magic. For Lethe needs magic to run effectively. The underground movement recognises Lark as the girl from the book. In fact in one part of the book "the girl" is names as Lark Ainsley. Lark finally thinks she may have caught up with Basil, but n one knows of him and none of the rebels ever met the owner of the book.
Well the pace of this book is faster than book one and I certainly enjoyed this book much more. There are twists and turns aplenty though I admit to guessing one of the rather large twists quite early on in book two. I will not share it with you as you should read this book with your own imagination running through the possibilities for yourselves as I did.
I loved the characters in the book. Of course we have Lark, Oren and Tansy from book one, we also have new characters to meet such as Wesley, Olivia and Nina. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the rebels. their blindless faith in the book. They think that Lark is the answer to all their problems, that she can lead them against Prometheus and win them their settlements freedom. Plans are made, changed, adjusted and attempted .....but there's a well know saying isn't there about the best laid plans etc.
The end of the book makes you feel like you are right back where you started , but so much has happened, so many have changed, characters have died. Lark is once again setting out on a journey . . .will she ever gain what she seeks? Where will her journey end? I can honestly say I have no idea what is to come, which is great as in my mind there are limitless options for the final book and I am definitely looking forward to reading it as soon as it is available.
So did I enjoy the book? I have to say I totally loved it, I went through all the different emotions Lark had during her journey and with the people she met. Would I recommend this book? Definitely! even if you were a little unsure after reading book one, this is the book where the pace picks up, where I feel a lot of the action happens. So it is well worth reading. I have recommended this series to my daughter too. Will I be reading the final book in the trilogy? Yes please, I'd read it now if it were available for me to do so! I am looking forward to what conclusions Lark comes to in her journey. Would I read any more books by Meagan Spooner? I would love to, I do intend to seek out some of her other work to try.
