MY REVIEW
I
was sent this novella in exchange for my honest review by the Author Raye
Wagner.
So
the cover features a close up on a face, a quite beautiful face with freckles,
who is this woman? It could be one of a few women mentioned in the novella to
be honest but I’d take a guess at it perhaps being Phoibe.
The
novella basically sets the scene and I think gives us the background for the next book. The book has a lot of mythology
of Gods and Goddesses within it. I admit to not being a Gods and Goddesses expert
but everything is explained as you go along so that doesn’t become a problem.
There are times when certain things are explained and I feel that it makes the story
slightly disjointed. The story begins with Damon being on the hills with his
sheep and being seduced by a Goddess. When Damon returns to his village, he
continues his courtship, though with not as much urgency for marriage with a
mortal village girl. The next year comes along and the Goddess is waiting for
Damon with a gift. Their daughter. Damon returns to the village with his
daughter Phoibe ad has to convince his village girl to help look after his
daughter as well as still marrying him. Life goes on quite peacefully with only
one real shadow, Damon and his wife do not seem able to have their own child. Then
they find out about a curse which leaves Damon with a difficult choice. If he
wishes to have a family with his wife he needs to remove Phoibe who is still a
child from under his roof.
I
did like Phoibe’s story she is literally being courted by a God and a mere
mortal man. Who would you choose?
Well
Phoibe choses with drastic consequences, that affect her family and future. a God does not take likely to his affections being spurned. He will get his revenge. He chooses Phoibe's first offspring to aim he wrath at.
So
did I enjoy the novella? It was enjoyable, as a standalone book I feel it didn’t
make much sense but knowing it is kind of a prequel made it all make much more
sense. I don’t always go for mythological, Gods & Goddesses types of
stories but this one definitely piqued my interest and made me want to know a
little more. Would I recommend the novella? If you intend to read the series, I
would say I do recommend as then you have the “back story”. Would you read more
of the series? I would be interested in giving book one a go, so yes. Would I
read other books by this author? I’d certainly take a look at them.
