AUTHOR INTERVIEW - CINDY C BENNETT

  1. What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
Cindy C Bennett. I was born and raised in Utah, USA, which is where I still reside. I love it here. I don’t know that I’d ever move.
  1. What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarise it in less than 20 words what would you say?
Geek Girl is my newest book. Summarizing in less than 20 words is tough, but here goes:
Goth girl bets she can turn geek boy bad, never imagining he might turn her into a geek girl instead.
Whew! Did it!
  1. How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?
I’ve always loved to write, loved to make up stories. I even wrote a bunch of really bad ones as a young teen. In high school I had an amazing English teacher who taught me a deep love of literature, and of the creativity involved in writing. It was then I knew it was what I wanted to do—then proceeded to do absolutely nothing about it for too many years. I’m so glad I finally was brave enough to put myself out there, because it’s been an amazing ride.
  1. How do you come up with the Title and Cover Designs for your book/books? Who designed the Cover of your books?
Argh, titles! I have the hardest time coming up with titles for my books. I don’t usually have a title until I’m finished with the book, then I sweat and fret and finally just give it a name so I can finish it.
I designed the covers for Heart on a Chain and Immortal Mine. I also designed the original cover for Geek Girl, but Sweetwater Books designed the new cover—which I love.
  1. What is your favourite book and Why? Have you read it more than once?
This is an odd choice for someone who loves and writes YA, because it is a historical romance, but my all-time favorite book is Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale. I read it probably 4-5 times a year for the past ten or twelve years. I think the reason I like it so much is that the protagonists are anything but normal. She’s a Quaker, he’s a Duke who’s had a stroke and can’t speak. Both are perfectly imperfect, and the prose in the book is enough to make the stoutest of puritans swoon.
  1. Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favourite/worst book to movie transfer?
As a general rule, no I don’t. They have to cut too much out of the story to make it fit into the allotted time. It’s rare for a movie to be better than the book. Probably one of the best is The Notebook, because it follows the book pretty closely and doesn’t lose much in the translation. In my opinion, the worst is A Walk to Remember. The only thing that movie had in common with the book was the character’s names and that she dies in the end—and the movie was poorer for it.
  1. Is there a book you know you will never read? Or one you tried to read but just couldn't finish?
I’m one who sort of forces my way to the end of a book no matter how bad it is in hopes it will eventually redeem itself. I did read one some years ago that was so bad I didn’t finish it, but I honestly can’t remember the title. It’s the only book I haven’t finished. The only books I know I will never read is anything in the erotica genre. It’s just not my cup of tea.
  1. What do you think about book trailers?
I think book trailers can be a great marketing tool if they’re done well. I don’t know that there’s any real data to suggest that they help sale books, or if they just entertain a reader who would have read the book anyway.
  1. What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?
Don’t hesitate. If you feel you have a talent, and a genuinely good book, polish it up and get it out there. Don’t let fear of rejection hold you back.
  1. Do you or would you ever use a pen name?
I haven’t used a pen name to date, but might if I were writing something in a different genre. That way a reader won’t pick up a book expecting one thing and getting something completely different.

Where can readers follow you?
